This effect works best in dark areas on dark backgrounds with the flash on high, however it can still work as we can see from the photo above.
Here are the steps that you need to go through to get the perfect blurring image:
- Set the camera to a low shutter speed (if you are shooting outside then this is all that you need to do, but if you are shooting in a studio then you need to do a few more things in order to get a good picture)
- Set up a continuous light source
- Set up the black background with a polystyrene board protecting it from the light
- Match the white balance to the camera so that the colours are not out of sync
- The model or subject then moves into the light so that they are visible.
- The photographer then pushes the shutter and the model/subject begins to move so that it creates the blurring effect. Release the shutter and you have your blurred image.
It is important to remember than you need to keep your finger firmly on the shutter button and DO NOT remove it until you are satisfied with the image otherwise you will not get the blurring image that you initially wanted.
