Photographers

Jasper James

He is a China based photographer that works in Shanghai and Beijing and shoots many different types of portraits and advertising work.  He mainly likes to work with an editorial side of things as his portfolio ranges from portrait, travel and interiors to concept driven projects.

I really like this image because I feel a though the way that James has managed to capture it, it is as though we are looking at the city through the models eyes.  Being able to create this kind of feeling without actually taking it of the scenery in itself is very hard to do and I think that Jasper has got the perfect shot that creates a lot of drama and intrigue.  I like how the image seems to be faded in the top left corner of the image to make everything stand out more.  As the actual silhouette is darker, I think that this adds to the overall look of the image making it look a lot more interesting and creative.

This is another one of my favourite images by Jasper James because of the look and feel of the image.  The plane made to look like it is flying over the city is very well created and it adds a lot of tension to the overall look of the image.  I think that the effect that this image has is highly effective as it re-creates everyday life in a very subtle way and the way in which James has managed to do this is very imaginative and creative and has a much better feel than if there were to simply be an image of a plane over a city.

This image also really caught my eye as it looks as though James has used more than two images in order to create the photograph.  The use of the city skyline, the subject and the cloudy blue skies all in one photo adds a very dreamlike effect to the multiple exposure which I think is a much more developed way of looking at multiple exposures and I very much like the look that he has created using more than two images.  I also like how the very centre part of the image is the only area that is fully focused.

This was another photo that really stood out to me when looking through James’ photographs.  When I look at this image, the eye automatically stands out and somewhat pierces through the image so that it’s like the model is right there in front of you.  The fact that the right hand side of the image is almost foggy also puts much more attention on the person in this photo rather than having look at every aspect of it.  To me it is as though the left half of the image slowly fades through the face into the other side which I think is very effective and what makes this picture so striking.

Influence

I really love his multiple exposure work and I think that he has managed to create some stunning images.  The way that he joins the two images together with some of the image faded to put more emphasis on different areas is something that I would like to try and do in my own multiple exposure work.

Summary

Overall, after looking deeply into his work I really love some of the pieces that he has managed to create.  Originating from the rich country of China, he was most likely able to get some advanced photographs from a young age which has allowed him to develop his photographic skill and create these multiple exposures that I have taken a lot of inspiration from. The way that he manages to get the two images to blend together perfectly and creating an area that is slightly blurred from the rest of the image is highly effective and I think that it is definitely something that I would like to use to my advantage.

Christoffer Relander

Christoffer is a photographer born in Finland, who is a highly successful young fine art photographer.  He is most known for his multiple exposures between man and nature that are all very visually striking.

I really like this image and think that the way that he has blended to two photos together is seamless.  Especially on the hat area of the image, the way that the tree is shaped against her head makes it look like part of her head is missing which looks very intriguing and a lot more creative than if it were to be all aligned.

This is from a campaign that he shot for a charity called ‘Children with Tumours’.  This photo in particular I thought worked really well because of the way that he has placed the tree over the body.  As the campaign was mainly to get the point across of children being able to do whatever they want, I think the general jumping pose and happiness of the child is highly important and I think that Relander has managed to capture the true meaning behind this photo really well.

The three images in this photo would all be very striking on their own, however when you put them all together, you are met with this highly creative image that I think works extremely well.  The hand as the base for this image and the trees essentially cutting out the arm and making it look like the end of the tree with the roots being the fingers is a very creative technique that I would like to try out.  The face in the foreground adds to the drama in the photo and adds a mood and emotion to the image that makes the image very interesting to look at.

I think that this image has a very strong back story and I love the mood that it creates just from being able to see a single eye.  The way that the face is imprinted onto a shadow of a person, is also very intriguing because you get the idea that maybe the face is looking at the person who’s shadow it is, which adds a sense of mystery to the image which to me works very well and intrigues me more into working out the actually idea behind the image.

Influence

All of the work that Christoffer Relander has created, has really inspired me to look deeper into the topics that I am choosing to photograph.  He captures some really obscure and general things that some people don't see in multiple exposure.  He has focused a lot on various way to present multiple imagery through the use of multiple exposure which I think is really interesting and clever.

Summary

Relander, born in Finland is a very good experimental photographer who likes to work with a lot of experimental work including a multitude of multiple exposure work that he uses to a great advantage.  All of his work surrounding his winter edits and joining in the idea of multiple exposure to create some really intriguing and unique pieces of photography.  When it comes to all of his work, he tends to stick to the idea of multiple exposures as it seems to be an area that he is most interested in and the area that he produces his best work.

Aneta Ivanova

Ivanova is a self taught photographer from Bulgaria.  She mainly focuses on fine art and fashion photography as she began shooting simple portraiture in her home at the age of 13.  A lot of her work features multiple exposure photographs that I think are really unique and interesting.  To me, she has worked a great deal to show that she can create her own types of multiple exposures without following the ideas of every other photographer.

The way that the gap in the sky is making the outline of the building frame just behind the front of her face is really effective as it draws a great deal of attention to this area of the image which is probably the most important area.  I am not sure whether or not the photographer was actually meant to do this but either way it adds to the overall look of the image.  The fact that the street is essentially straight over her body could indicate a sense of vulnerability and a sad and lonely emotion that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to create through just one photo.  Through using two images it is creating a much more powerful image with a much deeper background story.

This photo has a very dreamlike essence about it.  With the clouds floating in the middle of the pillow it lets the audience know in more detail what is actually going on in the image.  The way that Ivanova has managed to put the clouds in this position to try and show this has worked really well.  As the scene at the bottom of the image is very dreamlike and relaxing, it would be seen as ‘like something from a dream’ which is why she has edited it in this position and to look this particular way.  If the beach scene was placed at a different area of the image, at the top for example, it would not be as effective because then the beach wouldn’t be at the bottom with the clouds over the pillow.  Even so, it could still be effective if it was edited in this way because the clouds would have been just over her head which would still indicate a dreaming idea.  As well as this, I think that the black and white effect on this particular multiple imagery photograph has worked a lot more effectively than if it were to be in colour.  I think this is because it has a lot of meaning the actual look of the image has to be a little more simple.

This photo is probably my favourite out of all of Ivanova’s photographs due to the way that the model looks and also how she blends into the background.  The way that she has shot this image, gives off the idea that she is actually becoming one with the trees and the mountain.  This overall look makes me think that she is giving off a sad and lonely vibe which seems to be present in a lot of her photographs.  Even so, I think that the black and white again adds to the final look of the image.  Around the neck area in the image, the trees have actually became one with her and sort of flows straight through her which to me is very effective as it looks as though it is actually going straight through her rather than just looking like someone has just placed it there. The bright light on the models arms and face add another dimension to the image and makes her stand out against the darkness in the background image.  The use of techniques in multiple exposure has allowed the photographer to really blend the two images together to create a striking image.

This is possible one of Ivanova’s most famous photographs.  The silhouette image is used a lot in her work with different background images to create different types of effect.  Much like the other photographs that I have looked at, it gives off a very sad and lonely effect as the people walking alone the road is just passing by her and by putting this over her body it is making us think that all of the people she comes across might not acknowledge her.  It gives off the initial idea of a busy lifestyle.  I like the way that at the top of her head it is a kind of beach scenario that would indicate that even though there is a lot going on around her, there is still a place in her head that she can escape to, which is the same for the busy lifestyle of the cities.

Influence

Ivanova is probably one of my most looked at photographers.  All of the work that she has created has greatly inspired me to focus more on various aspects of multiple exposure to make my work look better.  The elegance is mainly the factor that I have noticed in her work as all of her photos are very feminine and pretty to look at which I think is nice in this type of work.  She has influenced me to work more at the multiple exposures that I have currently created and I would like to do a shoot entirely based on her work at some stage.

Summary

The bulgarian photographer has created some visually stunning photographic pieces that I think will continue to have an affect for many years.  Everything that she produces from her advanced multiple exposures through to her more simple work, simply placing two images together.  I think  that everything she does will continue to take on a very elegant tone and I am definitely going to continue to look at her work as she continues building her portfolio.

Thomas Barbey

Thomas Barbey is a Swiss born photographer who began as a drawer.  He now lives in Las Vegas where he has been working as a photographer for the past 20 years.  He has combined several images taken over a period of twenty years to create surreal situations with the help of the enlarger in a dark room. His work has a specific style and is very characteristic. He only works with Black and White, including Sepia toning at times.  I have used his work as inspiration to create some surrealistic pieces of photography that will hopefully be up to the standard of his work.

I really like the effect that this photo has.  To me, it looks as though there are three different images used to create the surrealistic idea that the person has things to say perhaps or that they are screaming.  In the far background we can see the Taj Mahal after a dingy looking alleyway which may have some significance in relation to the mouth being very wide.  I still think that the look of this image is very effective and I would like to follow a similar concept when it comes to doing my surrealism shoot.

This is one of my favourite images by Barbey due to the way that he has managed to make all the various images, blend together so effortlessly.  He has edited it so well that it genuinely looks like the cars are driving into the tree, which i would think would be hard to create.  The fact that the image looks so realistic even though we know that it isn't real, is the type of inspiration that I am going to take and apply to my own work in the hope that the image will turn out just as good.

I find this image very intriguing to look at, to the point where it almost confuses me.  The way that the black striped on the zebras blend completely into the keys on the keyboard, is quite mind boggling due to the fact that it is highly unlikely that the stripes would actually fit in the way that they are.  Even so, the effect that the photo is giving off is very prominent and effective and I think that Barbey has managed to create something quite spectacular with this image.

This is another one of my favourite images by Barbey because I think that he has managed to capture the surrealism idea perfectly.  The way that the snow has effectively formed into some sort of cloth on the edge of the table is extremely interesting to look at.  I keep trying to figure out how he could have done this and it looks so seamless that I really cannot tell how he has done it.  Despite how hard this looks to create, I would definitely like to do a shoot based on this type of work and I would like to think that I would be able to create something similar.  I may not however, be able to take pictures of ski-ers to make it similar, although I might try a similar idea with cars driving over a bridge.

Influence

After looking a lot at Thomas Barbey's work, I have decided that his surrealistic environments that he creates are very effective and unique and I love almost every piece of work that he has created.  The sheer depth of editing and hard work that must of gone into these images has inspired and influenced me, to try to create my own types of surrealistic photography.

Summary

This Swiss born photographer living in Las Vegas, has had plenty the opportunity to create some visually stunning pieces of photography that create a dreamlike environment with all of his surreal photographs.  I love the amount of work that would have to go into the artwork that he creates as everything is so deep and complex and I think that using the idea of surrealism has allowed him to make a name for himself and create some really amazing work.

Florian Imgrund

All of the work that Imgrund creates, is done purely on his analog camera with not digital manipulation involved.  I think that this is a good way of looking at photography as it would make you think more about what you are doing in the moment and from looking through all of his work, it is clear that there is a lot of thought in his images which I think actually works out for the best.

This is possibly one of my favourite photographs out of all of the photographers that I have looked at, regarding multiple exposure.  I absolutely love the way that everything blends together to create a visually stunning image.  The line running through the hand that is clearly on the edge of the water in the background, seems as though it is trying to mimic the veins running through the arm and giving living to the image.  It's stunning to look at and the deeper you look into the image the more interesting it gets.  The faded area around the initial arm blends in with the entire image giving a faint elegance to the image which is very unique and intriguing.  I love the way that the entire image has been put together and I think that Imgrund has managed to capture this through his camera straight out perfectly.

I love the concept behind this image as it is very representative of the thoughts that many people feel.  To me, it is as though this man looks very normal and calm about things, maybe a little angry, but when you start to dig deeper into his mind and you see him for what he truly is, he is constantly worrying and running around wondering about what to do which is very intriguing and interesting to look at.  I also think that the black and white effect that is used through the used of an analog camera is very effective over a colour photograph.

This image is similar to the one of the hand and arm that I looked at first.  The way that the edge of the water is running through the arms of the person is very unique and interesting and I love the way that it has been shown.  The top of the edge on the tops of the trees in the background is also intriguing, due to the faded effect that we therefore get.  The entire image is very visually stunning, like the majority of the rest of his work.  I would love to be able to create something similar to this, using my own multiple exposure techniques.

When I first saw this image, the first thing that I noticed was the missing facial features due to the dense foresty area in the background.  The outline of a person is very prominent in the image, but the background image that has been used, is also very eye capturing and I think that this adds to the overall effect of the image.  I like the way that the top half of the image is a lot more faded than the rest of the image.

Influence

I love his multiple exposure work and I think that it is especially clever how he does all of his images with no digital manipulation.  I would love to be able to create similar work to Imgrund without using the pros of photoshop but I'm not 100% sure how it would turn out, although I would love to give it a try.

Summary

The work that Imgrund creates is really unique and different multiple exposures that are a lot more thought out and developed than some other photographers that I have looked at.  The effect that a lot o them have are also more striking as some areas are more faded giving off a kind of aged effect to the image that I think works really well.
